MATSUO BASHO (1644-1694) is considered to be the co-founder of the Japanese form of verse haiku. His poems reflect the simplicity of his meditative way of life. He endowed many of his verses with a mystical quality and tried to express the great, earth-shattering themes through simple images of nature. New Year's Day is a reflection on being alone with nature and the changing seasons.
