In May 1889, Masaoka Tsunenori coughed up blood and then used the stage name Shiki for the first time, a Chinese synonym of the Japanese word Hototogisu, which refers to a bird with a red throat. Shiki was only 34 years old, and the awareness of his short-lived existence shaped his entire work, which is unparalleled in abundance and quality among Haiku masters.
