In 1777 Yosa Buson's Yahanraku ("the joys of Yahan") appeared: a collection of Haikai and Chinese poems which, despite their small size, were of importance for the further development of this genre. Buson's search for meaning was to "turn away" from the ordinary (rizoku). What is special about everyday life should be traced in both painting and poetry.
